'Tsuranga Conundrum' Review

Updated: Sep 12, 2019

MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS

Flying ship, Space, New Monster

For me this episode was a bit flat and boring compared to previous episodes. The story wasn’t that interesting or original. If I was going to watch all previous episodes back, I would probably skip over this episode. It had pros and cons, like every episode, however for me this wasn’t that great to watch. The monster was a threat, but you weren't scared as by the way it looked and the tension didn’t really rise enough to make it edge of your seat TV.

A good thing about this episode was that we got to see more of the Graham and Ryan relationship develop, which is nice to see. They both have gone through loss and become stronger together as a result of it. It is great to see this relationship unfold and become stronger each week considering how they didn’t have the best relationship when we first met them. Along with this, we learn more about Ryan's parents and how is mum died. We also learn about the inner battle Ryan deals with his father. He is angry at him for not being there for him when he needed him, yet he understands that maybe he just wasn’t ready; we see this inner struggle in this episode as Ryan and Graham help Yoss, a male alien, give birth. We learn more about Ryan, yet Yas has kept quiet. We still know very little about her and what she is really like; she is still a background companion at the moment making no real impact. Next week looks promising that we might finally discover something about Yas to make her interesting to watch.

Pting, a new monster to the Doctor Who world. This creature eats anything and everything. A Pting is a very small and fast; its skins is toxic to the touch. This seems like an impossible task to stop this creature, yet even though this creature sounds scary and a typical Doctor Who monster, when we see it on screen the appearance of it doesn’t do it justice. The Pting looks cute and doesn’t seem a threat really yet it is trying to destroy the ship. It doesn’t appear that this monster will be remembered as clearly as past monsters. It is cute and a threat but not that memorable.

This episode is set in the 67th century and on a hospital ship. This ship isn't very interesting to look at, as it is pretty plain and simple. This whole episode isn't the best this new series has done. We are five episodes down in this new series and after this episode there are only five left. I'm still waiting for find something interesting out about Yas, however we have discovered more about Ryan and his parents and we have seen the Graham and Ryan relationship develop. What we do know is that by the end of this series, not all the companions will be returning but we don’t know I that means all of them or just one or two and how they might leave. Hopefully, next week we will finally get more of an insight into Yas, as she still isn’t making much of an impact in this episode at the moment. Along with all this, Tsuranga Conundrum is a good watch, but it is not very memorable and won’t be an episode I'll rush back to watch again.
