The Post (2017) Review

The Post is a great watch, by starring two great actors which are Helen Mirren and Tom Hanks as the two main protagonists who were in charge of the Washington Post. The character, Daniel Ellsberg photocopy's top-secret documents about the US government's deceptions of the Vietnam War; these documents would become the Pentagon Papers. Helen Mirren plays the character, Kay Graham, who is adjusting to taking over her late husband's business. Tom Hanks plays the character of Ben Bradlee who is the editor of the Post; which is Kay's business. These characters discover that the New York Tines has gotten these papers and exposed what's on them on their paper. A Post reporter finds the papers and gets a copy of these papers. The Post plan to publish their findings but this is put in jeopardy with a restraining order. Kay Graham must decide whether to back down for the safety of her paper or publish and fight for the Freedom of the Press. I enjoyed watching this film, very intense at times as you aren't sure what is going to happen; if the character Kay will take the chance and publish this story or not.

In my opinion not only is this film showing that papers should not be afraid to tell the truth, it is also shows the divide between men and women. The film depicts the character Kay, struggling to make it and run the business as she is a women. This can be clearly seen when there are scenes when she has to have meetings as she is only women there and the men don’t really listen to her. Yet at the end of the film she proves she can run the Post and that she is a good leader, even if she is women and that her business partners shouldn’t have looked down on her because of her sex.

Along with this, the film shows how papers should tell the truth and relates to how there is so much fake news out today. We shouldn’t be afraid to tell the truth and we shouldn’t lie to people as then if things like this happen then the public won't know what to believe and what is the truth or fake to cover up something important.

I went to see this film with one of my besties who is a massive Steven Spielberg who enjoyed this film; her response was "it had a good message, relating to fake news of today. Like its message to newspapers of today to not be afraid of the truth and to fulfil the purpose of the paper. Classic Steven Spielberg" (Cassie Riches, 2018). This response shows that this film is great watch for any Spielberg fan and won't disappoint.

This film is a great watch for any Steven Spielberg fan; it is clear that every little thing is thought for this film because while watching it you become part of the world, you become engrossed in the film. I do enjoy going to the cinema, however this time wasn’t as enjoyable not because of the film but people sat behind me kept kicking the back of my chair, as a result this breaks the cinematic illusion. This film was enjoyable but it broke the illusion of the film and made me annoyed. However, this is a good watch for anyone.
