The Goes Wrong Show: The Nativity Review

The Mischief Theatre Company are back and attempting to retell the most classic Christmas story we all know so well. However, in true goes wrong style it doesn’t go exactly to plan.

In a year with so much happening, this show is a great relief to forget all the bad things happening and brings some joy and laughter. In this Christmas special, the group are back and tell us the story of the birth of Jesus. However, the ensemble must deal with two fire alarms, a piano becoming set alight, costume malfunctions and the general line mix ups. Things that could go wrong in any show but everything that could go wrong does go wrong.

This episode is light-hearted and definitely hilarious. If you are having a bad day, this will lift your spirits. A pop-up book set proves to an actual danger to both the cast and crew while the angel Gabriel develops a firework obsession. The cast have worked on many theatre shows and a series together so we know they work well.

Robert played by Henry Lewis is our firework obsessed angel Gabriel. Not only is Robert the most senior and longest serving actor in the Cornley Drama Society. While Lewis is not only an actor in the show but he is also on the writing team too. Lewis is always a highlight to watch, his timing is perfect and his characters are always so memorable for all the things they do that aren’t what you expect.

Henry Shields is also part of the writing team and can be seen playing Chris. Chris is the company's short-fused director who introduces every show and can be seen yelling at the cast especially, Dennis. He just wants the show to go well and attempts to carry on when things go wrong but he just wants everything to go right. In this episode, he is the narrator and at the piano reading to play for the carols.

Dennis is played by Jonathan Sayer. Dennis joined the team after none of the other drama clubs would accept him. He is known for forgetting his lines and messing scenes up. In particular in this episode, he is the innkeeper and gets his lines completely wrong which results in Chris getting extremely angry. This moment is a particular highlight and stand out moment which is very memorable.

Charlie Russell plays the part of Sandra in the Cornley Drama Society. She plays the part of Mary in their Nativity retelling. Sandra is normally seen in the lead actress role hence now she thinks she the best actor her acting skills are above the rest. Sandra makes the least amount of mistakes because she is such a professional yet she does drop the bowling ball baby on someone’s foot in this festive special.

Dave Hearn is back as Max and Max is playing Joseph this time. Max is not considered the best actor of the group and is always breaking the fourth wall which he odes in this episode too. However, Dave is a great actor as we fall in love with Max every time he is on screen.

Vanessa played by Bryony Corrigan is back, Vanessa is one of the newest additions to the cast who is prone to be clumsy. Annie played by Nancy Zamit, known for really trying hard and you can tell she loves to act. Both Corrigan and Zamit can be seen playing one of the wise men and each are one half of a donkey but at some point they are even the same half of the same donkey.

This cast work so well; all the character just mesh together perfectly. This retelling of the Nativity is hilarious and takes your mind off everything going on at the moment. All the mistakes are perfectly timed and nothing is expected. When something goes wrong you believe it wasn’t meant to happen but happy it did as it is so enjoyable to watch. A very festive and funny episode which puts you in a great mood. The Mischief Theatre Company have done another great job and it is hoped we get more episodes again soon.
