'The Battle Of Ranskoor Av Kolos' Review

Updated: Sep 12, 2019

The final chapter of this year, we meet old enemies and meet great species. . . .

This is the last episode of this current series and for the year; it doesn’t feel like much of a conclusion to a series. The stakes are raised in this episode and luckily, we don’t lose anyone, maybe in the New Year's Day episode we will get more of a conclusion to this series. We do get to see Graham go on an emotional journey in this series and it concludes in this episode; making him a better person.

There is a lot of powerful speeches made in this episode, which at times is emotional; but for me the most emotional part of this episode was the conversation between Graham and Ryan. It is clear that Graham is still grieving over the death of Grace in the first episode and in this episode, he wants to kill the monster as revenge. The last episode of the series and we see the great journey Ryan and Graham's relationship have gone on, they are now closer than ever with Ryan confessing his love of his Grandad. Ryan is the level headed one in this relationship now as he remembers what his Gran would say to him if she was still alive and he repeats that to Graham to make him see that he needs to be the bigger and better man.

Normally, at the end of a series we say goodbye to someone, normally a companion so it is a bitter sweet ending; however, this time no one left and there were no goodbyes. Maybe, this is why this episode doesn’t feel like an end of series episode as we didn’t have to say goodbye to anyone and we are so use to that happening. At one point we think we are going to lose Graham, if he did take his revenge but he didn’t. This goes back to the classic Doctor Who era, where an end of series was a break before the next story began.

We got to see more of a fight in the Doctor tonight as she is trying to save everyone with very little time. The threat is much bigger tonight, planets have been taken out from their place in the universe and earth came under threat too. We meet the Cyberbots again, which we first met I the episode called 'The Ghost Monument'; this time there is an army of them. They are a distraction from the real monster/villain in this episode. A lot of people worked out who we would be fighting, so it was no surprise we came face to face again with Tim Shaw, the monster that was the cause of Grace's death. Tim Shaw travels to the Ux home world 3000 years in the past instead of going back to his own home world due to the Doctor by mistake. The Ux are very powerful beings, and there is only ever two, but that generation lasts for hundreds of years. The Ux have grand mental powers and they travel looking for the Creator. Tim Shaw uses this and makes the duo believe that he is the Creator and uses their abilities to have them make him a grand weapon that steals, shrinks and stores planets that ever stood up against the Stenza.

Looking back at this series overall, it was a good introduction to the new team on Doctor Who. We got to see famous and historical events from the past; we met the likes of Rosa Parks and met a few alien races. We have a bigger Tardis team than we are used to. We got to see Ryan and Graham go on a journey together and see them become a family. Yaz wasn’t necessary as she didn’t have too much of an impact; we didn’t learn much about her, for me personally I didn’t enjoy watching Yaz as she didn’t bring much to the adventure. What I have missed this series is the variety of aliens and complex plots. Everything has been quite straightforward, but I miss having a bigger build up to the series finale when everything was discovered, and everything made sense. This series was good, and I enjoyed watching it, but I do miss parts from the old series. We get a New Year's Day episode and an old monster is brought back, the Daleks, so it’ll be interesting what they’ll do with this story and how they will bring back a fear but beloved monster.

This was a good way to end the series, however I feel the New Year's Day episode will be a real ending to this series as we then have to wait until early 2020 before we get another new series. This episode was good, and we got to see how far certain characters have come. We met an old enemy from the beginning of the series and we met a great, legendary species. It was a good end to a series however I feel like the New Year's Day episode will be the real end to the series.
