Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019) Review

Spider-Man: Far From Home follows Avengers: Endgame. Spider-man is a light-hearted relief from the goodbyes and the losses we suffered from Endgame. This film also suggests that Peter Parker could be the new Iron Man?

Far From Home has the big job of continuing after the events of Endgame and ending phase 3 of the Marvel Universe. This film begins shortly after Peter Parker's (Tom Holland) life has resumed in Endgame, but it is five years after being dusted due to Infinity War. However, life has carried on as it always does. For everyone who was "blipped" out of existence and back again, they carry on as if nothing happened. We don’t see any scenes of anyone suffering to understand what happened to them. In this film, we see Peter who is excited about going on his science trip to Europe and trying to proclaim his love to MJ. Along with this we see Peter trying to deal with the loss of Tony Stark by going on this holiday yet Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and a brand-new hero named Quentin Beck (Jake Gyllenhaal) aka Mysterio have other ideas.

Mysterio proclaims he is from another dimension where the "Elementals" have destroyed his Earth and now they are coming for our Earth next. There are a lot of twists and turns in this movie so as a viewer you are always hooked into what is happening. Some of the twists you expect to happen, but the post and mid credit scenes add twists that you don't expect and now you want to know what is going to happen next, but the film is over.

Tom Holland is relaxed in this role; he knows who this character is now, and audiences love his take on Spider-Man. We spend two hours in love with this version of Spider-Man, we want him to become the person we know he can be, and the man Tony Stark saw in him. Peter and Tony had a great relationship, Tony was the father figure Peter never had before. Now that he is gone, Peter has to find a way of carrying on without his father figure/role model but remembering what he did for him. We Peter/Spider-Man grow up in this film from the previous films and there is a huge similarity between Peter and Tony which is nice to see as we know that Peter is becoming the man Tony saw in him from the very beginning. Along with this, we see the dilemma every superhero goes through: How do I live a normal life when all this superhero stuff keeps getting in the way? Normally there is no way around this, but Spider-Man keeps trying which in the end is his downfall but once he reaches the bottom, he knows he has done wrong and starts to climb back up and grows up. Holland makes Peter incredibly lovable and as a viewer you feel real sympathy for him when he falls so low but then we are joyous when he picks himself up and starts fixing his mistakes.

Other noteworthy performances are from the supporting cast of Peter's high school friends. All these characters add a lot of energy to scenes with their conflicting at times personalities. There is a lot of humour in these performances which adds relief from serious or emotional moments which are throughout this film. Also, Gyllenhaal makes a classic Marvel entrance which is surprising and amazing to watch. We first see him and wonder who this powerful and amazing man is. It feels like Peter is trying to replace Tony with Mysterio as he is struggling to carry on without his father figure . Yet we see that you can’t trust everyone that you meet.

Zendaya and Holland have instant chemistry when in a scene together and they show more realistic teenage awkwardness especially when you are around the person you have feelings for. We can all remember that high school crush and wanting to tell them how you feel but there is always that awkwardness because no one wants to be rejected. This relationship works well and a true example of high school awkwardness and love.

A variety of music used is in Far From Home. We begin with Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" which playing over a dedication to the fallen Avengers from Endgame. For viewers this can be quite emotional as you remember how many original Avengers we did actually lose. Then a range of music is played as we travel to different countries during the film. A memorable song which is used for a very important moment is "Back in Black" by ACDC. This is played as Peter builds his new suit, this is a defining moment in this film as Peter is growing up, becoming the person everyone believed he would be. At this point in the film, Peter has reached his lowest point and now wants to make up for it. This is also the moment where we see a resemblance to Tony whilst Peter makes his new suit which is exciting to see as it shows who Peter might become. Music is always important in any film and Far From Home, some of the songs are quite memorable and have a strong impact in what we are watching.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is a nice follow-up film from the recent Avenger's films. Far From Home shows Tom Holland really comfortable as Spider-Man. Peter is struggling deal with the loss of Tony Stark and everyone is putting lots of pressure on him to become the next Iron Man and the head of the Avengers. This is a title which doesn't seem right for Spider-Man. With that being sad, this film isn’t all about the loss of Tony Stark, it is full of twists and turns and Peter dealing with the fact that having a normal life and superhero life will always clash. With any Marvel film there is post and mid credit scenes, these drop huge cliff-hangers to this film making viewers want to know what is happening and what will happen next. It is an exciting time for the Marvel universe and fans are looking forward to the upcoming films and these post credit scenes make fans and viewers excited for more. Far From Home is the relief we needed yet we want to know what is going to happen to Spider-Man now his secret is out, a cliff-hanger we didn’t realise we would get but excited for what is to come.

Tom Holland is back playing Spider-Man!
