She-Hulk S1E3 Review

Considering the title of the show is She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, we haven't seen Jen Walters (Tatiana Maslany) do much as a lawyer. Although, she is thankfully back in action and will be appearing in court in this week’s episode. The third episode, "The People vs. Emil Blonsky," does a fantastic job of integrating the superhero aspect of the show with what will hopefully continue to be its procedural focus.

In contrast to Episode 2, this episode opens up immediately where the last episode left off, with Jen confronting Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth) about his brief stint outside of jail. Blonsky claims he was coerced out of his cell and only came back of his own free will. Leaving Jen and Nikki (Ginger Gonzaga) to find the perpetrator of the brief prison break. That individual was Wong, the Sorcerer Supreme/Kamar-Taj Librarian (Benedict Wong).

One of the episode's high points is the hearing itself, which gives Roth the chance to shed his gruff military commando persona from The Incredible Hulk. He can finally really display his comedic timing. He is a joy to watch as he swings between a seriousness that verges on the insincere, sarcastic fatigue and everything in between.

Additionally, it's weird that there is a side plot surrounding Megan Thee Stallion and an elf in this episode. It feels like quite a random thing to be put into the plot. On the plus side, it is amusing to watch, but it feels quite random as well.

In an intriguing turn of events, Blonsky is granted parole by the parole board under the condition that he not change and wear an inhibitor. For the time being, at least, he appears prepared to abide by the conditions. Even though this is Jen's show and not Blonsky's, I hope this isn't the last time we see him. Maybe Blonsky will simply make a cameo appearance in the end to assist (or obstruct) the inevitable super-powered showdown.

Finally, at the end of the episode, Jen is attacked by a group of young men brandishing smuggled Asgardian weapons. It turns out that the perpetrators of the attack are more than just irate youngsters who view the existence of a strong woman as a personal slight. They mention that "the boss" won't be pleased" if they were unable to draw her blood.

Now our focus is on who is the boss, and why they want her blood. Obviously, it’ll be about her ability to form into the hulk. Yet, there might be a deeper and more complex plot at play here.

When watching a Marvel show, it might be difficult to concentrate on the plot that is being delivered without thinking about how it will be used later. With the show's strong ensemble cast as of right now, there is a lot to think about. Overall, it was nice that we got to see Jen be a lawyer.

While also the overall plot seems to be getting more complex, which is what we like to see from these series. It makes it more interesting to watch as you want to know what is going to happen next.
