Medici Series 1 + 2 Review

Updated: Sep 12, 2019

Action, Sword Fighting, Romance, Family, Politics and a Star Cast. What is not to love about this show!!

Medici: The Magnificent is the second series in the Medici story has just been released onto Netflix. The first series, Medici: The Masters of Florence, welcomes us to the Medici family. This family is an Italian banking family which are heavily involved in the politics of Florence. The stories in both series are based off true stories of the real Medici family.

This show is set in Florence in the early fifteenth century. In Series One, Cosimo de' Medici finds himself at the helm of his banking dynasty when his father, Giovanni, dies suddenly. Medici: Masters of Florence stars Dustin Hoffman as Giovanni de' Medici, Richard Madden as Cosimo de' Medici, and Stuart Martin as Lorenzo de' Medici.

Series 2, jumps 20 years into the future and we see the rise of Lorenzo the Magnificent, otherwise known as Lorenzo de' Medici. Along with the Medici family we see the rise of the famous painter, Botticelli, who is close to the family and at the end of the series we see him painting Primavera (Spring) one of the painter's most famous works. The main focus on this series is the Pazzi conspiracy who are the Medici's main rivals throughout this series. The Pazzi conspiracy is show quite accurate to the real history of events. Medici: The Magnificent stars Daniel Sharman as Lorenzo the Magnificent, Sean Bean as Jacopo de' Pazzi the head of the rival banking family who plotted to kill the Florentine ruler and James Bradley as Giuliano de' Medici (Lorenzo's brother).

Both series emphases the families love of art and how Cosimo de' Medici and Lorenzo de' Medici use their power and influence as the head of the Medici bank to foster revolutionary art that led to the Renaissance. Each episode in each series builds up until we get to an amazing, emotional and action-packed finale. We experience love and loss throughout both series. Medici: The Masters of Florence is a huge murder mystery throughout as we are trying to figure out who is the killer; this might surprise you who is the culprit. Medici: The Magnificent is all about survival and doing the right thing even if other people completely disagree. The first episode of both series can be slow at times as it is setting up the rest of the series, but it doesn’t take away from how great this show is.

If you like, history or action or romance or all of these then this show is defiantly for you to watch. I loved watching every second of this show; this is something different to watch but it's exciting as you aren’t sure what will happen next or who the real killer is. At times this show really pulls at your heart strings as these characters are portrayed extremely well and you become attached to them and don't like to see them getting hurt. What also makes this show so good is the fact that it is based off a real family and true events and everything is portrayed really well and convincingly.

I can't fault this show, it is one I would recommend to everyone.
