Killing Eve Series 3 (including episode 8) Review

We are at the end of the third series of Killing Eve. This has consisted of eight animals in total. Not a lot happened in this series but it was hoped that we would get answered in the finale. We find out who killed Kenny (Sean Delaney), Carolyn's son and Eve (Sandra Oh) and Villanelle (Jodie Comer) finally reunite.

The final episode was written by current head writer Suzanne Heathcote and Laura Neal. Neal is who is lined up to take over the next series from Heathcote. We see deaths which is normal for any episode like Dasha (Harriet Walter) who was hospitalised in the previous episode and a death which some may have hoped for or will be surprised by.

The main portion of this episode centres around 'who killed Kenny?', yet the answer to this question isn’t given enough time to develop and grip the audience. Instead we are given information and the anticipation isn’t as built for as long as we may have liked. Carolyn (Fiona Shaw) is shown new footage of the day Kenny died which shows Konstantin (Kim Bodnia) with Kenny. This information is given to her by the Bitter Pill Office. The Bitter Pill Office has been barely used, it could have been used more effectively to grip and add intensity to certain episodes. The characters in this team should have been used more to help with the cases and have more of a purpose. Yet when they come face to face with Villanelle this moment is funny to watch which is a nice relief and makes these characters more enjoyable to watch.

The discovery of Konstantin's involvement in Kenny's death is met with the reaction from Carolyn we have all been waiting for all series; we finally see her angry and somehow has found a gun to use. Shaw is perfect is this moment, her rage is beautiful to watch as we have waited so long to see it and it isn’t a disappointment when we finally see her express her feelings. The reasoning Konstantin gives for being there for Kenny's death isn't fully convincing and if it is true then it isn’t a very fitting end for a such loved character that killed, more like we killed this character and we need to think why he must die and the reason we have been given leaves us wishing we never found out.

Geraldine (Gemma Whelan) Carolyn's daughter doesn’t have a real purpose throughout this entire series but for someone for Carolyn to be mean too. She comes across as very whiny yet it is clear that these two characters are complete opposites. Seeing Carolyn in another way not just professional but her family life didn’t really work as Carolyn's life is her work. It was more enjoyable to see her as the respected MI6 boss than a woman who is trying to carry on with her work when her work resolves around death while her daughter doesn’t understand. It was interesting to see how Kenny's death affected Carolyn's home life but after a couple of episodes it wasn’t interesting anymore as nothing changed in her home life just her relationship between her daughter got worse. The mother-daughter relationship didn’t work as it just didn’t feel right when watching it and it couldn’t be resolved only got worse as each episode went on.

Eve and Villanelle finally meet up again and will we get the ending to the will-they, won't-they storyline that has been carrying on since they first met. Unfortunately, we don’t get the satisfying ending that maybe some people may have been hoping for. The ending isn’t the most satisfying ending we would want but it makes us excited for what will be in the next series, hopefully more exciting than this series has been.

Overall series three felt much slower compared to the previous two series and each it felt that in one episode something really exciting would happen yet the following episode would be slow. Series three gave every reason why Eve and Villanelle should be together yet at the end they don't know if they could be together. The final moments are intense as we are left wondering if they will turn around and what does it that mean if one or both take that final look. However, we know it isn’t really the final look but for now as the credits role it is until the next series.

What we have learnt in this series is that Eve doesn’t want to be settled down anymore and we don’t see her go through much grief from the loss of her husband as she wants nothing from her anymore after he got stabbed in the neck. Villanelle on the other hand doesn’t want to kill people anymore. This switch shows how far these two characters have come and how their relationship (or obsession) with each other has changed themselves and what they want in life. This series has been good, it has had the same elements from previous series but in comparison felt a lot slower as a whole. However, the music in this series has been perfect, always works perfectly in the action that is playing out. The music used is always a highlight of each episode as it just works so well.

It will be interesting to see how the next series will continue the Eve and Villanelle relationship, will they be together or apart when we re-join them. What will Carolyn do now after the events of the final episode? Is the hunt for the 12 over or will they come back for the next series. There are a lot of questions we are left with for the next series but let’s hope the next series will bring back more of the excitement and anticipation we got from the first series. We used to finish an episode wondering, what could possibly happen next and didn’t want to wait for the next episode. Series three was good but it could have been better, maybe this series is just preparing us for the next series but it felt we lost something this time, hopefully it can be found.
