Killing Eve Season 4 (2022) Review

Killing Eve has been a highly praised show for many years now. Now we have been blessed with a fourth and final season.

If you are new to the Killing Eve world, then where have you been? To summarise quickly, we follow a determined yet unsure intelligent agent called Eve (played by Sandra Oh), who has been on a real journey throughout this show. We also watch the fearsome yet broken assassin known as Villanelle (played by Jodie Comer). Both of these characters are absolutely obsessed with one another, yet we never really learn why.

Since Eve started to track Villanelle, the criminal network known as the Twelve keeps popping up and have murdered a lot of our beloved minor characters. Eve has made it her mission in Season 4, to destroy the Twelve. Yet what the Twelve want or why they do what they do is still unclear.

Killing Eve is known for being a mysterious, enticing, and funny show. This is a show where the actors really shine, and they put on phenomenal performances. The first season was undoubtedly the best season, mainly thanks to Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s writing. It was full of witty one-liners and a very attractive aesthetic, which meant I couldn't look away from your screens. There hasn’t been an antagonist like Villanelle, and we aren’t sure whether there will be another one like her.

From then on, a range of female writers has taken on a season of this show. This was never an easy task, to keep this show going in. Laura Neal takes on the enormous task of not only writing the fourth season of Killing Eve but finding a suitable ending that could please everyone.

When it comes to Villanelle, she has always been a strong character, with very messy history. A character with so many voices and so many different names. We have watched Villanelle go from ruthless to being aware of her feelings and opening herself up to another person. We see in this fourth season, that Villanelle tries to be good and try again. However, what we learnt from this season is that Villanelle can’t fully change who she is.

Eve has gone on her own huge journey in this show. Now in this final season, she is free from her dull husband and job that she didn't really like or enjoy. She now has a much more interesting life that she enjoys. In this final season, she is seen living in a hotel and having casual sex with her attractive colleague.

Sandra Oh has been great as, throughout all the seasons, there has been a gradual progression with this character, and that has been fun to watch. The nerdy and safe Eve has turned into a fierce and much stronger character, that now takes risks.

In addition to Sandra Oh, Jodie Comer has been the best Villanelle. Yet, this character has done a complete U-turn compared to Eve. Villanelle started off as a really strong character, then after meeting Eve, she started to struggle to overcome what kind of life she wanted for herself. Season 4, reinvents this character, as someone who wants to change and be better. She starts going to church with the hopes of showing Eve that she is no longer evil. However, it was a shame, we didn’t get to watch more of Villanelle in those beautiful garments that we saw her wear in the first couple of seasons.

We end this final season on a huge cliffhanger. There were a lot of positives, but as the episodes progressed, the episodes weren’t hitting their usual mark. There is no denying that the final moments in the final episode were shocking. Yet, that is what you expect, from a show like this. A lot of people have drawn distinctions between Romeo and Juliet and compared them to Eve and Villanelle.

Killing Eve has been on a real journey, throughout its four seasons. We cannot deny that this was the weakest season out of all four. This is a shame, as so many people wanted this episode to end on a real high. With that being said, the performances are still incredibly strong in this fourth season. However, we just wish that the story and overall plot were stronger and more intense. It was a good season, but the ideas need to be stronger and more thought out. However, the ending will keep some fans safe for years.

Sandra Oh and Jodie Comer star in the final season of Killing Eve.
