This film a tribute Robin Williams, who was the star of the original film. Most people that I spoke to didn’t really want to see this film and normally when people make a another film after the first film being successful that new film is never really as good as the original. However, this film doesn’t disappoint, with an excellent cast and crew this film isn't going to disappoint.
This film was directed by Jake Kasdan and starred Dwayne Johnson who played Spencer, who is depicted as the stereotype geek/nerd who has troubling talking to girls yet in this film 'Spencer' comes over this battle by falling for the character Martha played by Karen Gillan. The character 'Martha' is portrayed as the shy girl who doesn’t think much of herself i.e. she prefers to be alone than rather try as she doesn’t want to get hurt. Thankfully the journey she takes through the game shows her that she is worth something as she gets the guy she wants, in this case she gets Spencer. Along with these two characters, Jack Black plays the character Bethany, which is an interesting casting decision that Kasdan has made. Yet Jack Black portrays a girl really well and is very comical. Also Kevin Hart plays the final main character Fridge; who in my opinion was my favourite character in the entire film as he was extremely funny and different from the other characters. Nick Jonas makes a special appearance in this film by playing the role of Alex; this is a character we meet at the start of the film in 1996 and got stuck in the game for 20 years.
Throughout this film CGI is used effectively as you know it's there but you don’t notice it at the same time, however, during the rhino scene you can tell CGI is being used and the scene doesn’t look very realistic which lets the illusion down as it breaks the illusion and it can make you question the setting. Also I did feel that Dwayne Johnson's portrayal of Spencer was a bit much but this might be due to the fact that we are used to seeing him performing different kind of character.
Constantly laughing throughout this film and would recommend; even if you have seen the original this film doesn’t disappoint and lives up to the original. The film shows the different struggles of a teenager and the stereotypes of teenagers like the dumb blonde who only cares about her looks - this type of character is portrayed by the character 'Bethany' or the nerd as said earlier on. What this film does is put four unlucky characters together - the nerd, the jock, the loner and the popular girl and make them see how they can work together and how they have things in common and could be friends.
