How To Train Your Dragon: Hidden World (2019) Review

This is the final time we get to see Hiccup and Toothless in an adventure together. This film picks up a year after the events of the second film; we see now chief and ruler of Berk, Hiccup, who along with Astrid his love interest from the first two films and the rest of his friends from the original film and his mother have been rescuing captured dragons. These released dragons are brought back to Berk, which has been transformed into a dragon and human utopia. However, the island is extremely overpopulated with dragons. Hiccup desires to find the 'Hidden World', a safe place for dragons; a place at the end of the world, this was told to him by his late father, Stoick.

We get to meet a Light Fury dragon, which is held captive by warlords and is given to the infamous dragon hunter Grimmel the Grisly as bait to capture Toothless. Grimmel is known as the killers of Night Furies the only one left is Toothless, but he is of some use as he is also still alpha. Toothless and the Light Fury are attracted to each almost immediately as they see each other. With the threat of Grimmel, Hiccup decides to evacuate Berk to go and find the 'Hidden World', but instead they find an island not too far away from the 'Hidden World' not that any of the characters realise this and begin to settle there.

Hiccup notices Toothless desire to fly by himself to advance his relationship with the Light Fury. Hiccup creates an automatic tail for Toothless, as a result, the two dragons fly off to an unknown land. This unknown land is the 'Hidden World', Hiccup and Astrid find this world whilst looking for Toothless. In the final showdown, Toothless saves Hiccup form the dragons of the Hidden World but then both Furies are captured by Grimmel. Hiccup and the dragon riders set out to stop Grimmel without their dragons.

Without spoiling what happens at the end of this big fight, Hiccup vows that until mankind can coexist peacefully with dragons, the dragons will stay hidden until that day and the Berkian’s will guard their secret. This ending is very close (almost exactly the same) to the book these films are based off and the ending is very satisfying for everyone if you have never watched on of these films before or if you have watched all of these films. Along with this, the ending and the credits is quite emotional. The animation throughout this film is amazing, especially when we see the 'Hidden World', the animation is breath-taking. In essence, this film is adventure mixed with love, love for the dragons and other characters.

I was excited when I knew this film was coming out and this didn’t disappoint. This film is a great way to end this trilogy; it's sad that there might not be any new films of this franchise, but this was a great and emotional way to end Hiccup and Toothless story.
