Ghosts, Episode 1: Who Do You Think You Are? Review

Updated: Sep 12, 2019

Growing up I loved watching Horrible Histories and now the original cast are back with their own show called Ghosts.

Alison and Mike are a cash-strapped couple who want to buy their first home, luckily when a distant relative dies, they inherent a country estate. However, this old house is haunted by the ghosts of its former owners. The ghosts are horrified when their new owners plan to turn their peaceful home into a bust hotel. As a result, they plan to scare them away, but their efforts have unexpected consequences.

A favourite part of Horrible Histories was the stupid deaths and you could say that elements has been brought over to this new show. Among the ghosts, there is a scoutmaster, Pat (Jim Howick), who was shot in the neck by one of the boys in his adventure group. There is a beheaded Tudor (Laurence Rickard), where the head can be heard shouting for his body to come back after him. Laurence Rickard also plays Robin the Caveman, but we aren't sure yet how Robin the Caveman died, maybe we will find out. Another ghost is a failed poet called Thomas Thorne (Mathew Baynton). We even have the ghost of a fictional 90s MP called Julian (Simon Farnaby) who wanders Button Hall without his trousers on, which is quite amusing costume choice and makes you wonder how he died. We have ghosts from different era, Ben Willbond plays First World War Army Captain known as The Captain, he thinks he is in charge and leader because he was a Captain during the war.

Onto the female ghosts!

We meet Lady Button (Martha Howe-Douglas) from the Edwardian era, who is known to scream as she falls from a window to her death every night. Also, we meet the witch, Mary (Katy Wix) and Kitty (Lolly Adefope), I'm not sure who or when Kitty has come from but I'm sure we'll learn more about her as the series goes on. That’s the main ghosts that we have met and will focus on in this show. As you can tell all these ghosts are very different as they are from different eras, therefore they clash but this makes for exciting viewing as they do clash but they are also a family as they have been trapped together in this house for hundreds of years.

Whilst watching this first episode you do question what these ghosts can do, for example the Captain walks through his bedroom door like a ghost but lies on his bed like a human would without falling through it. Also why is Mary (the 17th Century witch) teaching the other ghosts how to make a basket if their hands pass through the material unless they choose what they can and can't touch. Julian, if he concentrates extremely hard can knock a cup off a table. As a result, why can the ghosts pass through things at one point but don't at others? Is this an oversight or a reason we are yet to be told?

At first neither Alison or Mike can see the ghosts but after Alison is pushed from a window by Julian and put into an induced coma for a few weeks, she comes back to Button Hall with a new power - she can see the ghosts. We are left on this cliff-hanger with Alison screaming as she sees all the ghosts, next week we get to find out what she'll do and what happens next which I am excited to see.

As mentioned, most of the dead are played by Horrible Histories veterans, who also wrote the sitcom along with Lolly Adefope. What I love about this show already, is that it is a more grown up version of Horrible Histories yet the whole family could still watch it together. This show is full of humour and gags and I look forward to what the rest of the series has to offer. This show is Horrible Histories stupid deaths of the ghosts meets the real world. I believe this show will be a success and think everyone should defiantly watch it!!
