Gemini Man is Will Smith's newest film about what makes us human, our emotions. This film is directed by Ang Lee and stars Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen and Benedict Wong. Gemini Man focuses on retiring assassin, Henry Brogan (Will Smith), who finds himself being pursued by a mysterious killer that can predict his every move. We discover that he is being hunted by a clone of his younger self. Henry goes on a journey to find out who the creator is and why he is the target.
There has been a range of reviews since the release of this film, however there may have been many bad reviews but one thing that is for certain is that the acting in this film is amazing. Will Smith is the star of this film; his acting is faultless and he puts his all into this film. Smith plays two roles, Brogan and the younger clone of Brogan, named Junior. These two characters are similar in personality yet Junior goes through a more emotional journey in this film. Smith does a brilliant job in portraying this inner struggle on screen. A moment in particular is when Junior speaks to Clay (Clive Owen) who created Junior, the emotion Smith puts into this scene, we feel Junior's heartbreak and he puts so much emotion into this scene that for an audience is can be quite moving to watch.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays Danny Zakarweski, she’s an agent who helps Brogan escape the killer who is after them. Danny shows us the more emotional and regretful side of Brogan. It is hinted at the beginning that there might be a romantic link between these two characters yet in the end it was a nice change to see these characters just be friends. They work well together and are a strong team. The chemistry between the entire cast but in particular these two works really well.
Gemini Man is a mixture of a few emotional moments, a couple of humorous lines and a lot of action. The main character who brings the humour is Baron (Benedict Wong), his one liners are perfectly timed and will add a smile to anyone's face watching this film.
As mentioned above, Will Smith plays two parts, and with Junior CGI is used to make Smith look younger. Throughout the film, this younger self of Brogan looks very realistic and we wonder how this effect was managed. However, at the end of the film the CGI is very bad and we question why the animators decided to do this. Junior looks really out of place thus taking away from the what could have been a good ending, to making the audience question why the CGI is so bad at the end when it has been amazing throughout the rest of the film. As a result, this is what makes the ending so annoying as it feels like the animators didn’t try at the end to make Junior looks realistic so the audience feel disappointed that they slipped up right at the end.
The chosen camera shots for this film are very noticeable, the main shot we were given was the front on close-up shot. This shot meant that at times the spectator may have felt they were part of the film as they are looking into the eyes of the character talking and they are talking back at us. What is important to realise also is that these shots were held longer than normally a director would allow, therefore the shots have a bigger impact on us, the audience. The score helped with this impact too, Lorne Balfe created a great score which added more emotion to certain moments and scenes. Without this score this film wouldn’t have had as a big of impact during particular scenes.
Gemini Man isn’t the best film out at the moment but it is still good in its own right. The plot is very jumpy at times and there is a surprise at the end with another killer coming after Junior and Brogan, yet it is very obvious who it is. There are no real unexpected surprises but with saying that the performances from the entire cast are amazing. Gemini Man does keep you interested in what will happen next, it is just a shame that they slipped up on the CGI and the script wasn’t the best at times. Speeches could drag on for a while and have no real effect in what was happening. Overall, this film isn't the best but it is still worth a watch, as it is still enjoyable even though it isn’t perfect.
