GameFace Series 1 Review

Updated: Sep 12, 2019

I have been seeing lot of adverts for the second series of GameFace which looks really good and I am excited to watch it. As a result, I decided to binge watch the first series in one day to see what to expect in the second series.

Looking back on this first series I am excited for what the second series has in store. For those who don’t know, GameFace is a series created and written by Roisin Conaty, which focuses on the life of Marcella (Conaty). Marcella is going to see a life coach which her mum has brought her for her birthday, and we see her struggling to get over her ex-boyfriend of 12 years and fall for her driving instructor. We see all the good and mainly bad decisions she makes. This thirtysomething out-of-work actor is hopeful to get her life back together. She was with her ex-boyfriend Simon (Dustin Demri-Burns) for 12 years and he left her and within 6 days he married another woman who looks unbelievably really like her. We meet Marcella a year after this break up who has been taking temp jobs and dressing up as princesses, mermaids etc for children's parties while also finding time to take driving lessons with the lovely Jon (Damien Molony).

As a viewer, you really sympathise with Marcella, she is trying to get her life together but is guilty to listening to the devil on her shoulder instead of the angel which causes her lots of guilt. She has a broken-heart and is trying to move on and survive which is relatable to many people. Lots of people go through break-ups which can be the hardest thing in the world to move on from depending how long you have been together. Also, lots of people struggle with money and the job they have. This show is for everyone, anyone can relate to some aspect of this show and find everyone will find this show hilarious.

We all have a friend like Marcella, or we are her. However, after watching this it seems like there is aspects of Marcella in everyone thus another reason why this show is so good, humorous and relatable. Everyone goes through inner struggles on the right thing to do when big changes have been made in your life.

This show is actually really funny, the cut-away are particularly funny. Along with humour there is moments throughout with lots of emotion which you might not expect but makes this show even better. The supporting cast are just as good and hilarious as Marcella. Everything and everyone work so well together. This show is well written and shot.

The end of the first series, Marcella confronted Simon (after sleeping with him) and it feels like she can finally get over him. Along with this she has fallen for Jon (her driving instructor), they had a date and it didn’t go too well but we are left with them in the car. Marcella failing her driving test, and both are them are flirty with each. This suggests that more romance is on the cards for the second series between these two which is exciting to see how their relationship may blossom between them.

Although, from watching the series 2 trailer there may be more trouble with Marcella and Simon. What will happen? Will Marcella make more mistakes that she'll regret - probably but it will be funny to watch. I am really looking forward to the next series which starts this Wednesday (17th July 2019) on Channel 4. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started watching this, but I was pleasantly surprised on how funny this show is!
