Derry Girls Season 3 (2022) Review

The end is finally here for Derry Girls, they have brought us a lot of laughs over the years and now we have had to say goodbye. The hype for this season has been huge and overall, this third season hasn’t disappointed.

Overall, the 7 episodes including The Good Friday episode have given us a solid performance. It has felt that this third season just gets better with each episode. All the episodes had good parts, but episode 6 was a stand-out episode in particular. We got a flashback episode, to get a better understanding of all the mammies and one of the adventures they went through. We discovered that all the mammies of our gang all grew up together and they had similar adventures to our Derry Girls. All the actors in that episode were cast to perfection and the similarities were faultless.

It has been wondered if this final series would give in to some fan theories, and one did come true. Finally, we got our moment between Erin and James in episode 5. It was all perfectly timed, and all Derry Girls fans screamed in unison when it finally happened. When you look back across all the seasons, you can see little hints that something could happen between these two characters, but it's great that the romance between them was never pushed. It just slowly evolved naturally.

Speaking of naturally evolving, that is something we should praise this show for. It all feels very natural and believable. Derry Girls has been great at showing the real struggles that teenage girls go through, while also navigating Ireland during a civil war. That's why it was such a good idea to end this show, by leaving it on a huge moment in Ireland's history and the Good Friday Agreement.

The cast has spent many years perfecting these roles. Each character is so different, but together this group works so well together. In episode 6, all the girls are dressed as angels, and a moment that really sticks is when all the girls crowd around Clare and their wings encircling each other. That was a really beautiful moment, with so much raw emotion. A moment no Derry Girl will ever forget.

It's amazing how Lisa McGee has written this show. Again her writing feels really honest and natural. She makes us cry with laughter one minute, to utter shock and tears of sadness the next. If you have managed to get through the entirety of episode 6, this is a clear example of how good McGee’s writing is. We expected to leave the episode on a positive note, with Clare finally getting a girl, and then her whole world is shattered in a matter of moments. It was definitely one of the most surprising and shocking moments, that no one expected to happen as it seems like we had come to a good ending. It was an unexpected way to end the sitcom.

The soundtrack to Derry Girls is so recognizable and upbeat. It was great that episode 7 ended on such a high, with an episode filled with a lot of hope. We were granted an hour for the final episode, to say goodbye to these girls, and it didn't disappoint. It was full of laughs and really highlighted an important part of Ireland's history that is still relevant today. Clare was defiantly the one to bring the comedic relief in this episode and it was needed.

We have said goodbye to our Derry Girls, and Erin's monologue at the end really summed up everything about this show. The performances from the entire cast have been perfect. The timings of every joke always worked well which marked the joke even funnier. It's a shame, we have had to say goodbye to Derry Girls, but at least they got to leave on a real high!

It's time to say goodbye to the Derry Girls.
