Big Mouth Seasons 1 - 5 Review

Updated: May 16, 2022

If you haven't watched Big Mouth, then you have been seriously missing out. This animated series talks about sensitive but common issues that a lot of people may be too scared to talk about. Yet really it gives these issues and topics a platform to make people feel ok with the theme. These are all topics that we have all gone through.

There is no denying this is a very adult show, where we watch a group of very horny 12-year-olds that are navigating all the changes and emotions their bodies are going through. Puberty isn’t a great time for anyone, but it is something we all go through. Hence, this is what makes this show so enjoyable and relatable.

An animated show which doesn't shy away from the big topics like masturbation, periods, and sexuality. Yet they navigate all of these subjects with ease while being informative. We are now 5 seasons in, with a sixth and seventh on the way. It is clear that Nick Roll is doing something right here. It is clear that it may have taken inspiration from other great original classic animations such as BoJack Horseman and Rick and Morty. This means this show successfully manages to remove funny yet there is some emotional vulnerability with the characters.

Big Mouth as we have said is a much more adult show, but watching it you may naturally start remembering how you dealt with these issues. This show is very relatable and that is what makes it so loved, but it is still very modern with what today's teenagers are dealing with. It is also interesting that the creators manage to keep our attention. We are watching these teenagers grow up, so as the season progresses we are introduced to more hormones and monsters. This is because the mentions and hormones of the teenagers become a lot more intense.

We get to watch the hormone monsters mess up and encourage the kids to take risks in their lives. Yet if they get it wrong then they have to deal with the shame wizard. New monsters and creatures have been introduced to use, with anxiety bugs, the depression cat, hate bugs, and love bugs. There are several characters to follow on this shoe. Nick and Andrew will always take centre stage in every season. It is great to see the side characters like Jesse, Jay, Matthew, and Missy have their moments of exploration and stories too.

Overall, Big Mouth is a really simple concept and comedy, that is talking about topics that really we should already be talking about more freely. As we await the next season, we know that they have big shoes to fill but we have no doubt they will do it well and choose topics that need to be discussed more. Big Mouth is a really enjoyable show that everyone should be watching, so if you haven’t watched it yet, you have been missing some of the best animated seasons on Netflix right now!
